Brian is a shareholder in the firm. His primary areas of practice are real property law, mineral law, environmental law, public utilities law and government relations. He received his law degree from the University of North Dakota in 1979. Brian is admitted to practice in the States of North Dakota, Montana and Minnesota.

Prior to joining the firm, Brian served as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of North Dakota, first representing the Board of University and School Lands in supervision of the State's mineral interests. He subsequently was given the portfolio of election law for the 1980 general election, which included a legal challenge to the State's ballot laws.

A significant portion of Brian's practice involves representing clients before state agencies, in particular the North Dakota Public Service Commission, the North Dakota Industrial Commission, and the North Dakota Department of Health. He has also represented clients in lobbying activities before the legislature and executive branch offices. He has extensive experience in preparation of title opinions, environmental issues affecting the energy industry, and litigation of contract and property law issues before state and federal courts.

Brian is a board member and treasurer of the Lignite Energy Council, a coal and electric industry trade association covering four states in the upper Midwest. Brian has been very active in the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation, serving for over ten years on its Special Institutes Committee. He developed two programs and served as program chair of these special institutes. He has twice served as a trustee of the Foundation. He has also participated in, and authored papers for, numerous other industry seminars both in state and out of state involving environmental, real estate and mineral law topics.

Brian is committed to civic involvement. He previously served for ten years on the board, including one year as President, of the Child's Hope Learning Center which is a preschool for special needs children. Brian has been involved with the United Way, having served as campaign chair in 1997 and as Board President in 1999. He is a board member of the Tom and Frances Leach Foundation, a charitable foundation granting funds for social and educational needs; and a member of the Board of Trustees of the YMCA. Brian has also been active in the Chamber of Commerce, having served as chair of government relations committee for the 1997 legislative session.
