Paul W. Summers, a shareholder with the law firm, has been practicing law for over 25 years. He specializes in the practice of natural resources and mining law, real estate law, and probate and estate planning. He received a bachelor of arts degree in business administration from Jamestown College, Jamestown, North Dakota, in 1974. He received a juris doctorate from Pepperdine University School of Law, Malibu, California, in 1978.
Paul joined the law firm in 1978. He has broad experience in the examination of abstracts of title, courthouse records, state records and federal records for the preparation of drilling/original title opinions, division order title opinions, and acquisition title opinions for oil and gas companies and coal companies. He has participated in several large acquisitions involving oil and gas companies. He also participated in numerous real estate transactions which required the drafting of commercial leases, purchase and sale agreements, deeds, mortgages, and other documents.
Paul has experience in the preparation of wills, durable powers of attorney for finances, durable powers of attorney for health care and trust agreements. Paul has probated numerous estates, both small and large, including estates with numerous mineral holdings. He has prepared federal and state estate tax returns.
Paul is a member of the Natural Resources Law and Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Sections of the American Bar Association, and Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section of the North Dakota Bar Association. He is a member of the North Dakota Mineral Title Standards committee and participated in the drafting of the mineral title standards for North Dakota. He has presented a number of papers covering mineral title standards, mineral law and probate law. He is also a member of the North Dakota Landman's Association.
